DEMOW, Nov 28: An awareness programme on child marriage was held on Thursday at the Laguwabari division of Rajmai Tea Estate near Demow, marking one year of the Bal Vivah Mukt Bharat campaign.
The event was organised by the NGO Kosi Lok Manch in collaboration with the District Child Protection Office, Sivasagar, and the ATTSA Demow branch to sensitise the tea garden community on the provisions of the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act (PCMA) 2006, the POCSO Act 2012 and related child protection issues.
The programme began with an oath-taking ceremony, where participants pledged to prevent and report child marriage.
District Child Protection officer Dr Bikash Ranjan Konwar, Dimpeemoni Borah from Child Helpline 1098, NGO representative Ankurima Gogoi, ATTSA Demow president Biswanath Nag and general secretary Amon Mirdha addressed the gathering.
Speakers highlighted the legal consequences of child marriage, the need for timely reporting, and the responsibility of families and tea garden management in safeguarding minors.
Large sections of the tea tribe community, representatives of ACMS, and members of the estate management were present at the programme.
