TEZPUR, May 10: Khelmati High School under Inspector of Schools, Sonitpur district circle organised a day long awareness programme on ‘Health and Hygiene and Menstruation Hygiene Management’ for the students of class 9 and 10 on Saturday.
The event was formally inaugurated by school head Janmoni Devi and graced by a host of teachers of the school. A detailed discussion was held to pass a message to the ‘taboo-trodden’ students hailing mostly from rural and remote rural areas that ‘Menstruation’ is a periodically caused physical condition that naturally/biologically happens to a girl or a woman and what measures should be taken up during that period. The students irrespective of genders were suggested to open up their minds in this regard and openly discuss the issues that arises during the menstruation of a girl. Delivering here the key note address on the issue, headmistress of the school, Janmoni Devi said that the discussion on the matter would be fruitful when all the students particularly the girls would get fully involved and be made aware on the issue revealing certain unwanted troubles faced by them during the ‘menstruation’ period.
Earlier among others attending the event as invited speaker of the programme, Assam Tribune’s Tezpur correspondent, Shambhu Boro and assistant teacher of the school Jiten Nath respectively spoke on the issue.
Giving an in-depth lecture on the issue Shambhu Boro highlighted that there is no option to create awareness among the rural students to eradicate the misconception or the taboo on the ‘menstruation’ issue. He also shared his views on how through the school education besides other issues of the society the students’ community could be made aware of maintaining health and hygiene. In the programme, senior teachers of the school, Kunti Rabha, Amit Narzary, Sunil Kachary, Sumitra Boro, Hemanta Sarma and Utpal Nath were also present. The entire programme was moderated by programme coordinator, Sumi Borah who subsequently offered vote of thanks.
