Baresohoriya Bhaona- 226th Edition Gets Underway

BISWANATH CHARIALI, March 5:  The Baresohoriya Bhaona which began from Sunday led Jamugurighat experience religious fervor.

Jamugurihat of Sonitpur is all set to celebrate the 226th edition of the historic Baresohoriya bhaona at Pokamura Pothar from March 6 to 9 here with a four-day long programme. Preparations to make the mega festival of Bhaonas a successful one from all sides have been underway. The organisers along with the office bearers of all the 25 sub-committees and the general public have been working round the clock to give the final touch to every pending works.

It is to be mentioned here that the unique tradition of the Bhaona culture started at Raghudalani in 1797 which was later shifted to other nearby places due to some circumstances and finally shifted to Pokamura Pothar near Jamugurihat commercial centre and beside NH 15.

The bhaona festival held after an interval of five years. Sonitkonwar Gajen Baruah played a distinguishing role to introduce the unique tradition in the national forum and the global arena as well. There is a unique tradition of Bhaona exhibition in 21 kholas at a time by 21 Bhaona parties from the adjoining villages.

This year, a total of 42 bhaonas will be performed in 21 kholas in two days i;e on March 7 and 8 . According to the agenda prepared and circulated by the Baresohoriya bhaona festival celebration committee 2023, a religious procession will be taken out from Borbhagiya namghar to the bhaona site which will be inaugurated by Biswajit Daimari, the speaker of Assam Assembly which will be attended by Keshab Mahanta, state health minister and Pramod Boro, BTR chief as distinguished guests.

Mahendra Bhuyan will inaugurate the Baresohoriya Bhaona venue followed by foundation of Singhashana by the representatives of 21 kholas.

Deva Kumar Mishra, deputy commissioner of Sonitpur will inaugurate the exhibition stalls on March 6. The second day programme will begin with nam prasanga followed by release of the souvenir by Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta, former DGP of Assam Police.

The programme will be presided over by Kanaksen Deka, former president of Assam Sahitya Sabha which will also be attended by Jayanta Baruah, Editor, Asomiya Pratidin and Dulal Manki, eminent folk artiste.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will inaugurate the first day bhaona programme on Tuesday evening which will be attended by ministers of the state government including Pijush Hazarika, Bimal Bora, Dr. Ranoj Pegu, Tezpur HPC MP Pallab Lochan Das beside others.

The state finance minister Ajanta Neog and state power and society minister Nandita Garlosha will grace the Aai Matri Samaroh on the third day. Similarly, the union minister for ports, shipping, waterways etc. Sarbananda Sonowal will inaugurate the permanent Baresohoriya bhaona project site and union minister for education, skill development Dharmendra Pradhan will inaugurate the second day bhaona programme which will be attended by the union state minister Rameswar Teli, state cabinet minister Atul Bora, the chief secretary to the state government Pawan Kumar Borthakur beside others. The concluding session covers award distribution ceremony followed by a cultural programme which will be inaugurated by Dr. Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharya, chief advisor of AASU. The president of the bhaona celebration committee cum Sootea MLA Padma Hazarika seeks all sorts of help and cooperation from the public to make the event a success.
