MARGHERITA, July 22: Margherita MLA Bhaskar Sharma has publicly challenged Sibsagar MLA and Raijor Dal President Akhil Gogoi to contest the 2026 Assembly election from the 83rd Margherita Legislative Assembly constituency.
The challenge comes in the wake of Gogoi’s speech during an election campaign at Rangamancha in North Margherita on July 13, where he reportedly made inflammatory and derogatory remarks against Sharma.
The remarks have sparked controversy and strong reactions across Assam.
Reacting to Gogoi’s comments, Sharma accused the Raijor Dal leader of lacking the basic decorum required of a legislator.
“I do not consider someone who speaks improperly and foolishly, disregarding the dignity of the Assembly, as a legislator,” Sharma said.
Emphasising his electoral record and popularity, Sharma said he won from Margherita twice due to his “dedication, work, and full public support”.
He dismissed Gogoi’s political relevance in the constituency and said the candidate projected by the Raijor Dal leader would not even come close to him in terms of public support.
Launching a personal attack, Sharma called Akhil Gogoi “useless and arrogant” and alleged that Gogoi “kisses and hugs Bangladeshi Miya women” during eviction drives at various locations in Assam.
“I have no time to reply to Akhil Gogoi’s questions,” Sharma added.
The remarks have added fuel to an already intensifying political rivalry ahead of the 2026 Assembly polls.
