SIVASAGAR, April 27: The Bir Lachit Borphukan College in Sivasagar has been accorded the autonomous status from the University Grants Commission.
Principal of the college, Dipali Neog received an e-mail on April 24 about the college being accorded the autonomous status. The achievement of the college comes close on heels with the up gradation of the Sibsagar College into a state university by the state government.
The state government upgraded the Sibsagar College at Joysagar in Sivasagar into a university through the Sibsagar University Act, 2023.
The Bir Lachit Borphukan College, was founded by Ananda Gogoi 1981. The college was initially housed in a temporary shed in Darikapar. It was later shifted to a new building by the National Highway -37 in 1999.
Dipali Neog said, “The college fulfils the criteria under seven heads set by the UGC. We invited National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) to the college for its assessment and certification on March 27 and 28 last year. We received the results on April 11. The college received B+ 2.65 cgp. After the NAAC assessment, we applied for autonomous status within a year in prescribed forms.”
“Our entire staff and students are very happy on our college being awarded the autonomous status on the basis of merit. AT the same time, we are aware of our new responsibilities as well. We have a long way to go to make the college a full-fledged one,” Neog further said.
As an affiliated college of the Dibrugarh University, the college now will have the liberty to prepare questions papers on its own. Further, this will also boost its infrastructure and many more facilities would be made available to students within the college campus.
Dhrubajyoti Borthakur, assistant professor of the college said that the new building was constructed with collective grants and aids from various sources during the stewardship of former principals Navin Gogoi and Pratima Gohain. MP funds from former Jorhat MP late Bijoy Krishna Handique and Rajya Sabha MP Kamakhya Prasad Tasa and MLA funds from MLAs Drupad Borhohain, Promod Gogoi, and Pranob Gogoi along with CSR aid from ONGC also helped the institution to develop its infrastructure.
