GUWAHATI, Oct 28: The Assam unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has strongly condemned the misuse of the name of Assam’s legendary general, Lachit Borphukan, by an organisation accused of engaging in extortion and intimidation.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, State BJP spokesperson Kalyan Gogoi said it was “extremely reprehensible” that an organisation named after Lachit Borphukan — the immortal symbol of Assam’s valour and patriotism — was functioning in a mafia-like manner.

Gogoi alleged that one Bikash Asom, operating under the banner of Bir Lachit Sena, had been spreading fear among the business community through extortion, blackmail, and threats.

“Using the sacred name of Lachit Borphukan, the eternal embodiment of Assam’s courage and dignity, for such nefarious activities is a grave insult to our cultural heritage,” he said.

The BJP spokesperson claimed that several businessmen across the state had already lodged police complaints against the accused, who is currently absconding. The party has urged the Assam government to take immediate action to arrest him.

Gogoi further alleged that the same individual had insulted poor and struggling mothers of Assam by comparing them to dogs in a video circulated on social media, calling it a “disgraceful and inhuman act.”

He also criticised the silence of other political parties and organisations, including the Congress and Bir Lachit Sena, over recent remarks made by Karnataka minister Priyank Kharge, who reportedly questioned the semiconductor project in Assam and commented on the state’s talent pool.

“Except the BJP, no political organisation has spoken up against this insult, which is deeply shameful,” Gogoi said.

Condemning the activities of such self-styled nationalist organisations, Gogoi said forming groups in the guise of protecting the nation while harassing the public for personal gain had created a “perverted and destructive culture” in society.

The BJP has called upon the police administration, social organisations, and the people of Assam to remain alert and united against such anti-social activities.
