BJP leader killed in Tinsukia; 1 arrested

TINSUKIA, March 13: A booth leader of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was stabbed to death at Doomdooma in upper Assam’s Tinsukia district in the run up to the first phase of assembly polls slated on March 27.

Deva Gogoi, president of No 20 booth committee under Biriding Gaon Panchayat in 124-Margherita constituency, was stabbed to death by a mentally unstable person at Borholong village when he was returning home from an election rally organised by his booth committee.

One person identified as Joy Chandra Gogoi, who belonged to the same village, was arrested in this connection.

Gogoi was rushed to the Bardumsa Government Hospital, nearby Arunachal Pradesh, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The incident has sparked tension in the entire Margherita constituency.

Meanwhile, chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal condemned the killing of a sincere worker of the saffron party and directed the police to nab the culprit immediately.

Condemning the incident, state BJP president Ranjeet Kumar Dass also urged the police to take action to book the culprits involved in the incident and punish as per provision of the law.

Dass also conveyed his deep sympathy to the bereaved family members and prayed to the Almighty for eternal peace of the departed soul.
