Border unrest: KSA, JSM to work together for peace

DIPHU, June 3: The Karbi Students Association (Jemson) and Jaintia Students Movement (JSM) held a meeting on the prevailing situation in the border areas of West Karbi Anglong in Assam and Meghalaya at Guwahati Karbi Hemtun on Saturday.

The meeting was presided over by KSA President Jemson Timung. Former presidents of KSA, Robindra Rongpi and Stalyn Ingti, and KSA’s General Secretary, Ramsing Tokbi, and Assistant General Secretary, Mohim Tisso, attended the meeting.

The president of JSM, Leningstar Rymbai; the working president, JSM, Jimmy Raul Kharmuti; and the assistant general secretary, Heybogme Thyrphet, attended the meeting from Meghalaya.

A KSA statement said that both parties expressed their appreciation for the initiative taken by leaders of JSM and KSA to ease tension prevailing at the inter-state border and put forward their opinions on it.

It has been expressed that the incident has affected the mutual trust among the permanent residents of the villages on both sides.

It is also mentioned in the meeting that the Karbis and Jantias have a long tradition of living together as good neighbours. It has been resolved that the KSA and JSM will work together to restore peace and tranquillity in the area.

The student bodies had come to the conclusion that they should set up a peace committee and select its convenors. The committee will find solutions with regard to border tension.

The Pnar and Karbi Peace Committee was also formed. The committee included the president of JSM, Leningstar Rymbai; assistant general secretary, Heybogme Thyrphet; president of KSA, Jemson Timung; and education secretary, KSA, Sar-im Bey.
