DIPHU, Aug 30: In a significant move towards resolving tension along the inter-state border between Meghalaya and Assam, the Karbi Students Association (KSA) and Jaintia Students’ Movement (JSM) held a joint meeting in Taralangso on Wednesday.
The objective of the meeting was to address the ongoing border disputes and promote a peaceful atmosphere in the region. To achieve this, a “Students Committee for Peace Initiative” has been constituted.
Led by the president of the JSM, Leningstar Rymbai, and the general secretary, Roitre Dkhar, the JSM central body delegation engaged in constructive discussions with the KSA in Diphu. The joint meeting aimed to find common ground and build mutual trust between the communities residing in the border areas.
Rymbai stated, “The joint meeting between KSA and JSM resulted in a consensus to establish the ‘Students Committee for Peace Initiative.’ This committee is dedicated to fostering peace and normalcy in the tension-ridden inter-state border region. Our goal is to enable both the Karbi and Jaintia communities to coexist harmoniously without feelings of insecurity.”
The committee will undertake initiatives to strengthen peace, promote understanding, and eliminate misunderstandings or mistrust between the two communities. A joint visit to the border areas is also planned to build mutual confidence and alleviate tensions. The committee’s efforts are expected to facilitate free business and promote a conducive environment for the residents of the border regions.
Mirjeng Kro, the president of KSA, emphasized the collaborative efforts between KSA and JSM. He shared that both organisations are committed to working together to resolve differences and tensions that have arisen between the Karbi and Jaintia communities along the border.
The joint committee’s formation aims to prevent misunderstandings and foster goodwill among the residents of the border areas. By issuing a joint statement, KSA and JSM intend to avoid any misinterpretations or hostilities among the communities.
Since October 2022, tension has persisted in the Khanduli area of West Karbi Anglong along the border with West Jaintia Hills district. The collaborative efforts of KSA and JSM are seen as a positive step toward easing these tensions and restoring peaceful coexistence between the communities.
