SHILLONG/ DIPHU, OCT 21: In a remarkable display of inter-village cooperation, Pnar farmers from Lapangap village in West Jaintia Hills District received assistance from Karbi farmers in harvesting their paddy, marking a significant return to normalcy in the area after recent clashes.
A video shared by the West Jaintia Hills district administration showcased the heartwarming scene, highlighting the spirit of cooperation between the two communities.

West Jaintia Hills Superintendent of Police, Jagpal Singh Dhanao, announced that police presence would be maintained in the area to provide security and prevent any outsiders from disrupting the peace.
It may be mentioned that Meghalaya and Assam governments on Monday reached an agreement to allow paddy harvesting in Lapangap and Tapat in West Karbi Anglong district after weeks of delays due to tensions between Pnar villagers of Lapangap and Karbi villagers of Tapat.
The agreement was made during a meeting at the Assam Border Outpost in Khanduli, which was attended by officials from both districts, including West Jaiñtia Hills ADC and Border Magistrate G.H. Passah, and West Karbi Anglong’s Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police R. Barua.
Prominent headmen and associations from both districts were also present.
During the closed-door discussion, SP S.R. Sarma informed that both sides agreed to allow the harvesting of paddy to resume peacefully.
The dispute arose on October 9 when Khasi Pnar villagers from Meghalaya crossed into Assam to harvest paddy, raising concerns among locals. The resolutions adopted in the meeting include three key points: both sides will maintain peace and mutual respect; the magistrate and officials from West Jaintia Hills assured that the culprits involved in the killing of Oriwel Timung, booked under BNSS, will be handed over; and the Khasi Pnar villagers will be allowed to harvest their paddy.
