SIVASAGAR, April 3: The CBI carried out a raid at the Sivasagar Amgurighat residence of the tainted Amar Asom reporter Khallilur Rahman Hazarika on Tuesday in connection with the Special CBI case (No. 07/2005), in which the Guwahati High Court on February 12 upheld the verdict of the Lower Court delivered on August 21, 2009. The reporter was convicted and awarded 2 years’ rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 5000 u/s 13(1) (d), 13(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act 1988.
Hazarika has been on the run since February 14 to evade arrest following the Guwahati High Court’s verdict in the ASCARD Bank fraud case. Hazarika had approached the Guwahati High Court against the verdict (Criminal Appeal 210/2009). Hazarika acquired a car loan fraudulently from the ASCARD Bank allegedly impersonating himself as one Atiqur Rahman Hazarika, an ASCARD bank officer.
In addition to his role as the secretary of the Sivasagar Press Club, Khallilur Rahman Hazarika also serves as the president of the Working Journalists Association in Sivasagar. A major section of the media fraternity has expressed surprise at how a tainted scribe can continue to be the secretary of a reputed journalists’ body.
Hazarika was in the limelight recently allegedly for his criminal involvement in obtaining Power of Attorney in issuing Khatian to illegal occupiers on lands belonging to Rasaraj Laksminath Bezbaruah in Pacipathar Gaon near NH37 bypass here and helping one Bidyadhar Gohain in grabbing the land, informed Satyakam Bezbaruah of the Bezbaruah family on Tuesday. The family is now seeking intervention from the chief minister in this matter.
