DIPHU, Nov. 08: Chief Executive Member (CEM) of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), Dr. Tuliram Ronghang today distributed cheques of Rs. 5 lakh as an ex-gratia to the next of kin of the deceased, who lost their lives in the 2004 ethnic clash from Sarpo Teron and Sarthe Engti village of Langvoku.
The cheque distribution programme was held at Langvoku picnic spot was attended by Assam Minister for Water Resources, Information, Public Relations etc., Pijush Hazarika; Chairman, KAAC, Raju Tisso; MLAs Darsing Ronghang and Bidyasing Engleng including Borjan Member of Autonomous Council (MAC) and Executive Member (EM), KAAC, Surjya Rongphar and other dignitaries and officials.
On March 24, 2004 an ethnic violence erupted in the hill district of Karbi Anglong between two ethnic communities, which resulted in loss of lives of atleast 27 people and rendering hundreds of families homeless.
During the clash, on the pretext to have a discussion with the elderly men of Langvoku Sarpo Teron and Sarthe Engti, the suspected Kuki militants called the villagers at one place and mercilessly killed all the 19 villagers present.
Following the clash, the KAAC had announced for a one-time financial assistance of Rs. 5 lakh to the next of kin of those persons killed in the clash.
While distributing the cheques the CEM said that it was a very sad event during that clash as 27 individuals had lost their lives. “They died for the cause of the community. They are regarded as martyrs,” he said.
The CEM further said that so far the KAAC has compensated the next of kin of more than 300 persons, who have lost their lives during Autonomous State movement, killed by militants or during ethnic clashes. The families were given Rs. 5 lakh as one-time financial assistance.
Going by the memorandum submitted by the Society of Sarpo Teron, Sarthe Engti and Amreng Engti villages, the CEM said in the meeting that very soon tenders would be called to start road construction work from Sarth Kramsa village to NH 29. Work on the road from Rongplimplam to Kongching village will begin soon.
As the Sainik School is coming up at Langvoku with a project cost of Rs.375 crore, the CEM assured that all grade III and IV posts will be offered to local candidates.
For those families having no land pattas will be covered under Purthimi Akemang 2.0, he said.
“As demanded by the village the construction of a cultural complex is under way. Under Asom Darshan a church building will also be constructed for Langvoku Baptist Fellowship. The statue of a noted Karbi literary figure Bonglong Terang will also be installed. Solar lights will be provided to the villages,” the CEM informed.
