DIPHU, Aug 10: In a bid to boost confidence among recent entrants to the BJP in Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong, Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) Chief Executive Member (CEM) Tuliram Ronghang on Sunday convened an interactive session with former leaders and workers of the All Party Hills Leaders Conference (APHLC), Congress, and other political parties who have joined the BJP.
The programme was held at Sarsing Teron (Langkung Habe) Memorial Town Hall, Matipung.
The meeting was attended by BJP East Karbi Anglong District Committee president Rolland Killing, BJP West Karbi Anglong District Committee president Radip Ronghang, MLA Bidyasing Engleng, KAAC Executive Members, Members of the Autonomous Council, and leaders from various party wings.
Addressing the gathering, CEM Ronghang said there should be no distinction between old and new members in the BJP, emphasising collective work and equality regardless of language, caste, community, or religion.
He urged party leaders to honour and accommodate new entrants according to their capacities at the district, mandal, or booth levels.
Signalling preparations for next year’s State Assembly elections, the CEM set the target of winning all five constituencies in Karbi Anglong—Diphu, Howraghat, Bokajan, Rongkhang, and Amri.
Criticising APHLC president J.I. Kathar, Ronghang accused him of “misguiding people with half-truths” and reiterated the BJP’s commitment to resolving the district boundary issue, strengthening the Sixth Schedule, and implementing Article 244(A) of the Constitution to grant an Autonomous State.
He said talks with the Centre on Article 244(A) would resume soon, though achieving the goal might take a decade or more.
Following the interactive session, a mass joining programme saw 26 APHLC supporters from Umsajer village, Amreng MAC constituency, join the BJP.
In a separate programme earlier in the day at the BJP East Karbi Anglong District Committee office, about 300 supporters from Duar Amla, Surupathar, and Kopili MAC constituencies also joined the party.
Welcoming the new members, Rolland Killing said the BJP works for the welfare of smaller tribal communities and treats all equally.
He called the decision to join the BJP “the right move at the right time” given the party’s hold at the Centre, in the state, and in the KAAC.
KAAC Agriculture Development Board chairman Mohon Tisso noted that more Congress members have been joining the BJP since Raton Engti became the Karbi Anglong district Congress president.
