GUWAHATI, June 11: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday visited the proposed site for an Indian Institute of Management (IIM) that is to come up in the Marabhita and Dighalkuchi localities in Kamrup district.
The Centre recently gave the final nod, paving the way for the establishment of the IIM. Approximately 574 bighas of government land have been selected for the upcoming premier management institute, the second in the northeastern region after IIM Shillong in Meghalaya.
The chief minister on Tuesday also visited the Rajdhar Bora Higher Secondary School at Azara and inspected the infrastructure and development activities being undertaken there. He also inspected the renovation works for the upcoming sub-district office at Jalukbari that is currently known as Haj Bhawan.
Interacting with the media at Marabhita, Sarma said the final nod by the Centre for an IIM in the state is a matter of great happiness and pride for the people of the state.
“After the IIM becomes functional the city and its vicinity can take pride of having the country’s four of the most prominent institutions of higher learning’s — an Indian Institute of Technology, an All India Institute of Medical Sciences, a National Law University and an Indian Institute of Management, the An investment to the tune of Rs. 1,000 crores is likely to be approved by the Centre for the IIM,” the chief minister said.
The Chief Minister further added that a School of Planning and Architecture might also come up close to the upcoming IIM. He said such positive developments in the field of higher and specialized education would contribute towards the transformation of Palashbari Assembly constituency into an educational hub in the region.
Sarma further stated that certain demands of the local residents such as an alternative road connecting the upcoming IIM with the highway would also be considered with all sincerity by the government. He also expressed gratitude towards the local residents for their wholehearted support.
“The ongoing infrastructure development activities across more than 400 government high schools and higher secondary schools in the state will fulfill most of the infrastructure needs of the state’s school education system. Up gradation and development of another 126 schools would be approved shortly by the government, thereby taking the total number of schools receiving such assistance from the government to over 500,” he said.
Sarma also said there would be a total of four sub-district offices in Kamrup (Metropolitan) district and the aim is to make them become functional by August this year. The sadar sub-division of Kamrup Metropolitan would not be recognised as a sub-district.
The government would see that all the proposed sub-districts across the state become fully-functional by 2025. He expressed hope that the sub-district offices would aid greatly in fulfilling the genuine hopes and aspirations of the people of the state in the days to come.
The chief minister was accompanied by state education minister Ranoj Pegu, chief secretary, Ravi Kota and Palashbari MLA, HemangaThakuria.
