Commemorative event celebrates Sonit Konwar Gajen Baruah’s birth anniversary

TEZPUR, Aug 18: The Sonitpur Zila Sahitya Sabha, in collaboration with the Khanamukh branch of Asam Sahitya Sabha, organised a full-day program at the Chiloni Gaon Panchayat office’s conference hall, near Tezpur, on Wednesday, to honour the birth anniversary of Sonit Konwar Gajen Baruah. The event commenced with the unfurling of the Asom Sahitya Sabha flag by Khanamukh Sahitya Sabha president Mohan Upadhyay. This was followed by a tribute-paying session and the ceremonial lighting of a lamp in front of a portrait of Sonit Konwar Gajen Baruah. These actions were carried out by local social worker Bolobhadra Das and Zila Sahitya Sabha official Kharanandev Nath.

Rupali Bora, chairperson of the Sonitpur Zila Lekhika Samaroh Samiti, attended as a guest speaker during the open meeting, which was presided over by Sonitpur Zila Sahitya Sabha president Dr Bhupen Saikia. In her address, Rupali Bora fondly recollected the profound contributions made by Sonit Konwar Gajen Barua to the state’s social and cultural realms. He was a contemporary of Rupkonwar Jyoti Prasad Agarwala and Kalaguru Bishnu Prasad Rabha. Gajen Barua’s legacy spanned his roles as an exponent of Vaishnavite culture, an artist, a theatre personality, and a pivotal promoter of Baresaharia Bhaona in the state.

The program also included the felicitation of high-performing students in the HSLC and HSSLC examinations from the area. The event featured captivating poetry recitations, songs, and more, captivating the numerous attendees.

Dignitaries present at the occasion included esteemed figures such as social leader Komison Mili, Jiabharali Mising Sahitya Sabha president Binod Kumar Mili, Nepali Sahitya Parishad president Anil Goutam, Lohit Saikia, Phanidhar Haloi, Jatin Gogoi, Bishnulal Chettry, Bhuban Chettry, Hemen Saikia, Nirala Deka, Prakash Upadhyay, Prakash Kotuwal, Lachu Prasad Chettry, and former vice president of Sonitpur Zila Sahitya Sabha, Prafulla Bora.

The program concluded with Deneswar Pawe, secretary of Khanamukh Sahitya Sabha, delivering the vote of thanks, and Kamini Barua acting as the host for the event.
