GUWAHATI, Sept 11: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday launched a scathing attack on the Congress after the party claimed it was confident of winning the upcoming Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections by contesting all 40 seats.
Dismissing the claim as “foolish and irrelevant,” Sarma said Congress’s approach showed how far the party has fallen.

“The Congress has turned into a crazy party. That is why they contested all 40 seats in the BTC election. Trinamool Congress and Jai Bharat Party also distributed seats. But politics does not work like that,” the Chief Minister remarked.
The BJP-led alliance, which currently governs the BTC in partnership with the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL), is preparing to defend its position in the council polls expected later this year.
In this backdrop, Sarma’s comments were aimed at downplaying Congress’s announcement and highlighting what he described as the opposition’s lack of strategy.
Recalling his own stint in Congress before switching to the BJP, Sarma expressed regret at the party’s current approach.
“What pains me is that I was once part of such a party where winning meant nothing more than distributing tickets. In such a situation, even the opposition will say they will win simply because Congress has handed out seats. Now Rahul Gandhi talks about winning on ‘moral votes.’ But tell me, can any party truly win just by contesting all 40 seats? This only reflects how much Congress has fallen in value,” he said.
The BTC elections are being seen as a crucial test for all major parties in Assam ahead of the 2026 Assembly polls.
While the BJP and UPPL are banking on development works in Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), the Congress and Trinamool Congress are attempting to make inroads into the influential autonomous council.
