NAGAON, Feb 26: The Congress party staged a strong protest in Nagaon on Thursday against the vandalism of a statue of India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru in Cachar district.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage with Congress leaders and workers taking to the streets to condemn the act.
The protest, led by the Nagaon Municipal Block Congress Committee, saw party leaders and workers marching through the streets, shouting slogans such as “Jawaharlal Nehru’s statue will not be broken”, “Insult to Nehru will not be tolerated” and “BJP government is shameful”.
Nagaon District Congress President Runumoni Bora, Assam Pradesh Congress Secretary Mrinal Kumar Hazarika and former MLA Dr Durlav Chamua were among the leaders who participated in the protest. They demanded that the government take strict action against those responsible for the vandalism. The Congress party condemned the incident, calling it a “shameful act” and an “insult to the nation’s first Prime Minister”.
The party has demanded that the government take immediate action to apprehend the culprits and ensure that such incidents do not recur.
