JORHAT, Jan 22: CSIR–North East Institute of Science and Technology (CSIR-NEIST), Jorhat, successfully organised a two-day national workshop and training programme titled “Decoding Pathogens Using Genomics Approaches for One Health (DePG-OH)” on January 21-22.
Part of the GDP-FINER project funded by the Department of Biotechnology, the programme aims to assess potential emerging infectious zoonotic diseases in North Eastern states, focusing on human, animal and environmental health under the One Health framework.

The workshop was inaugurated by Professor Shekhar C Mande, president of INSA and Dr Kartik Neog, Director of CMER&TI. Professor Mande highlighted the role of genomics in disease emergence, spillover and public health preparedness, while Dr Virendra M Tiwari emphasised CSIR-NEIST’s commitment to capacity building and translational research.
The programme included expert lectures and technical demonstrations by scientists from CSIR-IGIB, TIFR-NCBS, BRICS-CDFD, Assam Agriculture University and other institutions, covering topics such as zoonotic spillover, wildlife genomics, antimicrobial resistance and environmental DNA-based biodiversity monitoring.
Participants also received hands-on training in genomic sequencing and data analysis for pathogen detection. Around 100 students and researchers from all eight North Eastern states attended and certificates were distributed during the valedictory session. The workshop was widely appreciated for its scientific rigor, practical orientation and relevance to global health challenges.
