HAFLONG, Oct 29: In a bid to bolster emergency communication capabilities during disasters and prioritize the safety of Indian citizens, the Department of Telecommunications, in partnership with the National Disaster Management Authority, will conduct extensive testing of the Cell Broadcast Alert System.
A press release affirmed the unwavering commitment to the safety of Indian communities. The testing aims to evaluate the efficiency of emergency alert broadcasting capabilities across various mobile operators and the Cell Broadcast System. These periodic tests will be carried out in diverse regions of the country to assess the effectiveness of the systems in place.
The Cell Broadcast Alert System employs cutting-edge technology to disseminate crucial and time-sensitive messages for disaster management to all mobile devices within specific geographic areas, ensuring rapid and widespread notification, irrespective of residency status. Government agencies and emergency services utilize this technology to alert the public about potential threats, issue safety notices, and deliver essential information during critical situations, including severe weather warnings, public safety alerts, evacuation notices, and other critical updates.
During the testing period, individuals might receive simulated emergency alerts on their mobile devices. It is important to note that these alerts are solely part of the planned testing process and do not signal an actual emergency. Each test alert will be distinctly labeled as a “Test Message” to prevent confusion.
Scheduled for October 30, 2023, the tests are planned for the state of Assam. However, there might be last-minute adjustments to the test schedule depending on system readiness without further notice.
