DIPHU, July 4: Acting on the directive of the Chief Minister, a district-level coordination meeting was convened on Friday at the Conference Hall of the Deputy Commissioner’s Office in Diphu to review and strengthen efforts to combat child marriage in Karbi Anglong district.
The meeting was chaired by Karbi Anglong Deputy Commissioner Nirola Phangchopi, ACS, and attended by senior officials including the Superintendent of Police, SDO (Civil) Bokajan, Project Director of DRDA, Joint Director of Health Services, District Social Welfare Officer, District Child Protection Officer, Inspector of Schools, Labour Officer, and other departmental heads.
During the meeting, the Superintendent of Police reported a continued rise in child marriage cases across the district and highlighted the urgency of holding village-level awareness meetings.
He called for the active involvement of Gaonburas, villagers, ASHA workers, and Anganwadi workers to build grassroots vigilance and public awareness.
The Deputy Commissioner underlined the importance of adopting a “Whole of the Government” approach, with interdepartmental coordination among the Education, Health, Social Welfare, Panchayat & Rural Development, and Police departments.
All concerned departments have been directed to draft action plans focusing on field-level monitoring and the rehabilitation of children affected by child marriage.
As part of the initiative, awareness campaigns will be conducted across the three Legislative Assembly Constituencies—Diphu, Bokajan, and Howraghat—to sensitise the public and discourage underage marriages. Vulnerable areas will be identified through data-driven assessments, and regular monitoring will be undertaken to measure the effectiveness of interventions.
