DIPHU, May 21: Member of Autonomous Council (MAC) of Chinthong constituency, Avijit Kro on Tuesday launched the comprehensive data collection drive to trace students from his constituency who have been residing in people’s homes as domestic helps, particularly in Nagaon district of the state.
He visited the Dakhin Haibargoan Kolongpar LP School, Uzan Haibargoan LP School and Haibargoan Girls High School, where he met 8 children from West Karbi Anglong. These students have been studying in these schools and also staying as domestic helps in the homes of different people.
MAC Kro said, “Many minors from our district, who have been staying in the homes of different people as domestic helps, have faced unpleasant incidences. So, I have initiated this programme, which is supported by the Nagaon Karbi Students Association along with the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council.
Chief executive member (CEM) of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), Tuliram Ronghang has also offered his support and cooperation. I also request every social organisation, students, NGO, families and village headmen to provide support and cooperation to make this drive a success.”
Meer Teronpi of class I and daughter of Sarmen Teron and Kasang Rongpharpi, Rabina Phangchopi of class II and daughter of Pator Phangcho and Ganga Teronpi and Rashmita Lekthepi of class IV, and daughter of Monshing Lekthe and Humtara Teronpi are studying at the Dakhin Haibargoan Kolongpar L.P School. On the other hand, Mirmili Bongrungpi of class II and daughter of Sarsing Bongrung and Basapi Engtipi, Biky Senar of class III and son of Mensing Senar and Kareng Senarpi, Mirmili Kropi of class III and daughter of Rupsing Kro and Jyoti Senarpi and Arjun Senarof class IV and son of Rasing Senar and Anjoli Malang are studying in the Uzan Haibargoan LP School. Rubika Rongpharpi, daughter of Hemari Rongphar and Rani Hansepi is studying in class IX at the Haibargoan Girls High School. All these students have been residing as domestic helps in different households.
Two weeks ago Kro made it clear that children from his constituency would not be allowed to be taken to the neighbouring districts to be employed as domestic helps.
Avijit Kro informed the media that data collection of minors kept as domestic help in other people’s houses from West Karbi Anglong and Karbi Anglong districts has begun and will continue for a month.
The data collection drive was initiated by Nagaon Karbi Students Association (NKSA) and they will visit each school in Nagaon district. After collecting the data, the children will be relocated to West Karbi Anglong and provided free education.
