KOKRAJHAR, Dec 7: Sonam Wangchuk, a renowned educational reformist and engineer, has been selected for the 20th edition of the Upendra Nath Brahma Soldier of Humanity Award 2023. The Upendra Nath Brahma Trust (UNBT) made the announcement, recognising Wangchuk’s dedication to the welfare and upliftment of the educational sector.
Dr Subung Basumatary, chairman of UNBT, expressed immense pleasure in conferring the award on Sonam Wangchuk, known for his innovative approaches in education. The award, named after Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma, former president of All Bodo Students Union (ABSU), aims to honour individuals who embody Brahma’s ideology and philosophy.
Sonam Wangchuk, born on September 1, 1966, near Alchi in the Leh district of Ladakh, gained prominence for his contributions to education and sustainable practices. He completed his BTech in Mechanical Engineering from the National Institute of Technology, Srinagar, in 1987.
Wangchuk is the founder of the Students’ Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh (SECMOL), an innovative school that operates on solar energy and avoids the use of fossil fuels for cooking, lighting, and heating. His life story inspired the blockbuster movie ‘3 Idiots.’
The award ceremony is scheduled for December 23, 2023, at the Bodofa Cultural Complex in Kokrajhar. The Upendra Nath Brahma Soldier of Humanity Award includes a memento, a cash prize of Rs 2 lakh, a citation, an indigenous waistcoat, and an Aronai.
Dr Basumatary appealed to the citizens of the region to participate in the ceremony and celebrate Sonam Wangchuk’s contributions to education and humanity.
