GUWAHATI, March 31: Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia on Monday extended their warm greetings to the people of the state on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr.
In his message, the governor said the “festival of breaking fast” is a profound expression of faith, gratitude and spiritual fulfilment.
“It signifies the culmination of a month-long period of fasting, reflection and devotion, reinforcing the values of self-discipline and piety,” he added.
Acharya further said Eid-ul-Fitr is an occasion of joy and camaraderie, epitomising the spirit of universal brotherhood, compassion, generosity and love for humanity.
The governor called upon everybody to imbibe the virtues of the festival.
“May the celebration of Eid-ul-Fitr strengthen our bonds of brotherhood and inspire us to uphold the ideals of harmony and goodwill. Let this occasion be a catalyst for reinforcing peace, progress, and prosperity in our society,” he added.
Sarma, too, offered his greetings on the occasion.
“Let there be peace and prosperity all around. May the virtues of kindness and brotherhood always prevail,” he said in a post on X.
Offering his greetings, Saikia hoped that this occasion would bring peace, prosperity and happiness to everyone.
Lakhs of people across the state offered Eid namaaz in the morning and greeted each other.
The town of Diphu, the capital of the hilly district of Karbi Anglong and West Karbi, the administrative capital of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council, celebrated the holy Eid-ul-Fitr with great pomp and ceremony on Monday along with the entire district. The town of Diphu celebrates Eid-ul-Fitr after fasting during the holy month of Ramadan.
In Diphu, devout Muslims went to the Diphu Jame Mosque to offer prayers. In the Mosque, Maulana Gias Uddin Qasimi led the prayer to the Invisible One for eternal peace and brotherhood in the world. Special prayers were also offered for the souls of the deceased.
At the end of the prayer, every Muslim embraced each other and expressed joy on the occasion. The mosque’s general secretary, Mazaharul Islam, told reporters that the Eid prayers were offered for world peace and brotherhood and for eternal peace in the hilly district of Karbi Anglong so that people of all castes, religions, and races can live in harmony. They also thanked the administration for their cooperation during the Eid prayers, which enabled the occasion to be observed without any incident.
Our Hojai Correspondent adds: Along with the rest of the world, Eid Ul-Fitr, was celebrated across Hojai District with solemnity on Monday. Notably, Eid Ul- Fitr marks the end of the fasting period of the Islamic month of Ramadan and ushers in the month of Shawwaal. Thousands of Muslims joined the celebration of Eid-Ul-Fitr at Hojai Eidgha Maiden, Nilbagan Eidgha Maiden, Daboka Eidgha Maiden, Udali, Jugijaan, Murajhar, Gopal Nagar, Kapasbari,Lanka,Lumding. For Muslims, Eid Ul-Fitr is not only the signal of breaking the fast, but it also signifies the attainment of communication with the divine spirit and religious virtue, characterized by sacrifice, self-discipline and acts of charity. Many Muslims attended prayers and listen to a Khutba or sermon on the first day of the month of Shawwal, in every corner of the district. There has been belief that if a Muslim has not given Zakat al-fitr during Ramadan, he or she can give this on Eid-Ul-Fitr. Zakat al-fitr is a form of charity consisting of a quantity of food, such as rich, barley, dates, raisins or wheat flour, or its monetary equivalent given to the poor. Many Muslims also prepare festive meals to share; wear new clothes; visit relatives and give gifts or chocolates to children. Children thronged market places enjoying the festivity by purchasing varieties of food items, sports items.
Our Biswanath Correspondent adds: Assam Rifles celebrated Eid-ul-Fitr with warmth at Battalion Headquarters, Lokra, fostering unity and harmony between security forces and the local community on Monday, stated a press release. The event was attended by 15 unit personnel and 10 local residents, with a total gathering of 25 people.
The celebration began with an exchange of Eid greetings, followed by prayers and a gathering where traditional sweets and refreshments were shared. Assam Rifles personnel and locals engaged in meaningful conversations, strengthening the bond of brotherhood and mutual respect. The occasion reflected the force’s dedication to embracing diverse cultures and traditions.
Local residents expressed their gratitude for the Assam Rifles’ continuous efforts in promoting peace and communal harmony. The event concluded on a joyous note, with participants exchanging best wishes for prosperity and well-being, reaffirming Assam Rifles’ commitment to its motto, “Friends of the Northeast.”

Hundreds of Islam religion followers from various parts of Margherita Co-District area participated in the collective Eid-ul-Fitr prayers held at the Margherita Central Eidgah ground.
