TEZPUR, March 3: Eight Brothers Social Welfare Society, a leading voluntary organisation in the region, is organising a month-long design and technology development workshop on cane and bamboo crafts with the financial assistance of the Office of Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), Ministry of Textiles, Government of India. The workshop was formally inaugurated at the Eight Brothers Social Welfare Society Crafts Training Centre.
In the workshop, a total of 30 artisans from different parts of Sonitpur district are taking part. They are being imparted training on cane and bamboo crafts by Hariprasanna Saikia, an empanelled designer of Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, and Dhan Kumar Hazarika, master craftsman of cane and bamboo crafts, Tezpur.
While interacting with this correspondent, the activists of the NGO revealed that it would provide necessary assistance in enhancing the marketing of the products generated by the artisans in the next phase of the workshop. The workshop, scheduled to conclude on March 11, is expected to produce 20 models, and additionally, 50 improved toolkits of cane and bamboo crafts will be distributed to 50 selected artisans of cane and bamboo crafts from different parts of Sonitpur and Biswanath districts. Moreover, the trainees will be paid Rs 300 per day at the end of the workshop.
The workshop, supervised by Rakesh Das, a senior member of the NGO, is also giving special focus on providing necessary assistance to the artisans so that they can produce world-class products after acquiring adequate knowledge through the workshop.
