GOLAGHAT, Dec 23: As part of the Platinum Jubilee celebrations of Debraj Roy College, the Alumni Association of the Department of English organised the Alumni Meet 2025 on Sunday at the college campus. Debraj Roy College, one of the leading institutions of Upper Assam, has secured NAAC ‘A’ grade and was conferred autonomous status by the UGC in 2024.
The programme began on a subdued note and was slightly delayed due to the sudden demise of Dr Rumi Sabhapandit, retired head of the Department of Statistics of the college, on the same day. As a mark of respect to the departed soul, the organisers decided to continue the programme without pomp and gaiety.
Principal Dr Jayanta Barukial addressed the gathering, highlighting the history and 75 years of academic excellence of the college. He also inaugurated the art exhibition organised on the occasion. This was followed by the inauguration of the book exhibition by alumnus and working president of the managing committee, Ratneswar Saikia. The ceremonial lamp was lit by alumna Jaba Gohain.
After a chorus performance by past and present students of the college, the main programme titled “Sonnet of Souls” commenced. The event included felicitation of former and present professors of the Department of English, followed by felicitation and interaction with alumni. Shiva Prasad Bora, alumnus and former head of the Department of English of HPB Girls’ College, presided over the session. He was accompanied on the dais by Dr Anindita Dey, head of the Department of English, Dr Devojit Phukan, Dean, Faculty of Arts, alumnus Ratneswar Saikia, alumna Jaba Gohain and artiste Manjit Rajkhowa.
Hemanta Kumar Bora, alumnus and president of the central committee of the Alumni Association of the Department of English, delivered the inaugural address, extending warm greetings to all participants. Dr Devojit Phukan lauded the arrangements and appealed to alumni who had come from different parts of the state to actively participate in making the closing ceremony of the Platinum Jubilee celebrations, scheduled from February 5 to 7 next year, a success.
The programme was coordinated by alumna Principiya Phukan along with Parikhit Borah, Sanjib Kumar Das, Dulendra Chetia, Ankur Borah, Gargi Garima Sonowal, Lakhimi Devi Agosti, Rashmita Saikia, Mousum Tamuly, Saikot Chakraborty and several other alumni of the department.
