DIPHU, March 17: Executive member, Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), Fisheries; Handloom & Textiles and Adult Education, Madhuram Lekthe laid the foundation stone for construction of fishery pond under Amrit Sarovar central sponsored scheme at Rukasen College, Bakulia on Friday.

Laying the foundation stone, the EM said the college has more than 70 bighas of land and 12 bighas will be used for a fishery pond. The sanctioned amount is Rs 25 lakh and the project will be completed before the monsoon season.
The EM also brought into attention some persons who are making allegations that the construction of the fishery pond is being done to encroach the college land.
“As per government norms, the Amrit Sarovar scheme can be implemented on land belonging to government institutions or public-owned land (village land) and not on private land or lands belonging to private institutions. We are constructing the fishery pond not for our own. The government will construct the fishery pond. There will be beautification and a watch house. After everything is set the pond will be handed over to the college governing body. Whatever profit received from fish farming will go for the management of the college,” the EM said.
The EM also said constructing the pond is protecting the college land from encroachers. The laying of the foundation stone was attended by principal, Rukasen College, Dr Milan Banik; VDC chairman, Noren Killing; ward commissioner of Ward No7 of Bakulia town, Bijoy Hanse and JE, Langsomepi Development Block, Harlongki Timung.
Later, the EM also laid the foundation stone for the construction of a fishery pond at Rongchimrum, Volongkim Aji.
