KOKRAJHAR, Oct 28: A major fire broke out early Tuesday morning in Kokrajhar town, destroying a family residence and belongings worth around Rs 12 lakh during Chhat Puja celebrations.
The blaze erupted around 3:30 AM at a house on Depot Road, Tengapara, reportedly due to an electrical short circuit while the owner and tenants were at the Gaurang River ghat offering prayers. Four rooms were reduced to ashes, affecting two families — one belonging to Tilep Mushahary and the other to tenant Bharati Das.
Tragically, two students living in the house, Sholkha Basumatary of Kokrajhar Girls’ College and Dipal Mushahary of Bodoland University, lost all study materials, school certificates and recently issued scholarship cheques.
Residents said the fire service arrived nearly 30 minutes late, but the quick action of locals, who fetched water in buckets, helped contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to nearby homes.
