Five day Sivasagar Mahasivaratri celebrations begins today

SIVASAGAR, Feb 14:  The 5 day historic Sivasagar Mahasivaratri puja, and mela begins this evening through a ceremonious inauguration programme at Doul-mukh Chariali thronged by enthusiastic devotees. Dr  Jyoti Prasad Saikia, vice chancellor of JB University, inaugurated the Sivaratri festival in the presence of the Chief Guest and Sivasagar  MLA Akhil Gogoi, Sivasagar District Commissioner Mridul Yadav IAS,  DDC Sivasagar  Pabitra Das and Addl  Superintendent of Police , Moidul Islam, Sivasagar RCO Nekib Sayed Baruah, Rishov Hanche,Addl SP, Manoj Kumar Borthakur , sr journalist, Bidyut Bikash Gogoi, secretary , Sivasagar  Bar Association,  Dipanta Phukan,  Dy SP, Sanjeev Bora, Vice Chairman , Sivasagar Municipality Board and Sankarlal Agarwala. Dr Saikia released the souvenir Adrinath, edited by Ratu Das.

Akhil Gogoi in his speech said that Sivasagar would soon get entry into World Heritage Site list by March next which will incredibly develop tourism potential of the historic township. The Rs 145 crore Ranggar project will accommodate over 500 vehicles carrying tourists at a time, he said. 

District Commissioner in his speech urged people to observe the Sivasagar Sivaratri Festival with religious fervour as well as a model of communal harmony. Kartick Dutta, former principal, Sivasagar Commerce College, also addressed the meeting.

The Siva-doul built by Ahom queen Modambika, consort of the Ahom King Siva Singha- considered one of the tallest in the world, is the centre stage of Sivaratri celebrations over the centuries which attracts thousands of devotees from across the country. Over 500 shops have participated in the Sivaratri mela around the centrally protected monument, on the sides of the Temple  street,  Fuleswari HS School Field and Station Chariali.
