DIPHU, Oct 28: The leaders and members of the five factions of the Karbi Students Association (KSA) have come to a reconciliation and unanimously agreed to a unification.
The meeting was convened by the Karbi Rong Asar Amei (KRAA) with the joint effort of Karbi Cultural Society (KCS) and Karbi Lammet Amei (KLA) at the KCS central committee office, Taralangso here on Saturday.
The meeting was attended by the presidents and secretaries of KSA Inglongpho; KSA Lumding Road led by president Thomson Rongpi; KSA president Jemson Timung faction; KSA faction led by president Samson Teron, and KSA faction led by president Sumit Timung.
Expressing their contentment over the KSA unity in a press conference held at Hotel Hambi here yesterday (Sunday), the chairman of Team Tiger, an NGO in Karbi Anglong, Dhansing Kramsa said, “We are happy that finally the KSAs could unite. We appreciate the initiative of KRAA, KLA and KCS in uniting the KSA and congratulate the leaders and members of the five factions for the sacrifice they made for unification.”
The development witnessed the long-term aspirations of Karbi Anglong’s people becoming a reality. It is expected that after the unification process, the KSA will work for peace, harmony, and the cause of the student community, Kramsa noted.
Bijoy Bey, former president of KSA said the unification is significant for the local people.
“The KSA was founded in 1959 with Pratap Chandra Tokbi as the founding president and the late Gandhiram Timung, as the founding general secretary. Team Tiger appreciates the present leaders of KSAs for the sacrifice they made for unity. It will be an important chapter in the history of KSA,” Bey stated.
Team Tiger convenor, James Hanse said the various factions of KSA are now united and no separate or independent programmes can be taken up by them.
“KSAs have united for peace, unity and progress. No political parties will influence them. The KSA will work independently,” Hanse said.
He further added that until the new body is formed the KSA will function with a Committee formed with the presidents and secretaries of the five factions as members.
“On November 24 elections will be conducted to form a new body. In that election, the initiators KRAA, KLA and KCS will have 50 voters each and 10 voters from each of the five KSA groups. A total of 200 voters will cast their votes to elect the new president and secretary of the KSA,” Hanse concluded.
