SIVASAGAR, July 30: Freedom Fighter and 108-year-old Dimbeswar Prasad Baruah, who breathed his last in old age ailments in his Jaysagar residence, was cremated with State honours on Saturday near his home amidst the high officers of the district administration, his relatives and hundreds of admirers. DC Sivasagar Meghanidhi Dahal and SP Sivasagar Subhrajyoti Bora attended the function where the Police Battalion fired gun salutes in honour of the freedom fighter. DC Dahal expressed condolence to the bereaved family members on behalf of the administration.
Baruah, inspired by Mahatma Gandhi during his visit to Sivasagar, joined the freedom struggle as a Congress volunteer and was jailed by the British authority a number of times. Baruah received both Central and the State freedom fighter’s pension.
