Tezpur, Nov 15: Tezpur saw fresh tension this afternoon after police detained 24 men who were moving around the town without proper documents. The incident unfolded around 2 pm when locals spotted the group with bags near the ASTC complex and informed the police, raising concerns over their suspicious presence.

Police brought the men to Tezpur Sadar Police Station for questioning. They claimed to be residents of Jammu and said they had travelled by bus from Jammu to Guwahati and then towards Arunachal Pradesh. They added that a contractor named Arjun Singh had brought them for mobile tower work in Tenga, and they were waiting for a vehicle to proceed further from Tezpur. However, none of them could produce the mandatory inter-state permit required for entering Arunachal Pradesh.

Officers are currently verifying their identities and background. The group continues to remain at the police station until the inquiry is complete.

Locals have expressed unease, pointing out that this is the second such incident in recent days. Last Thursday, police detained 80 men from Cooch Behar who had arrived for brick kiln work. Residents say the growing arrival of undocumented labourers from outside the state needs strict scrutiny, warning that unchecked movement could pose security risks. Many have urged authorities to investigate the network bringing these individuals into Assam without valid papers.
