Guwahati, Oct 28: The Gauhati High Court has granted bail to Dr Waliul Islam, one of the two accused in the high-profile Guwahati child torture and sexual assault case that surfaced in 2023. The case involved Dr Islam and his wife, Dr Sangeeta Datta, who were arrested for allegedly abusing their two adopted children.
According to reports, the High Court approved Dr Islam’s bail on Tuesday against sureties of ₹50,000 each. However, it remains unclear whether he will be released immediately, as multiple cases are still pending against both him and his wife.
Dr Sangeeta Datta, who was arrested alongside her husband in May 2023, has not been granted bail. The arrest came after disturbing visuals went viral on social media, showing their minor daughter tied up on the terrace of their residence under the scorching sun as punishment.
The couple faced charges under several sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012. The POCSO Court had framed charges under Section 6, relating to aggravated sexual assault. Two separate charge sheets have been filed, and the children were placed in a child care home following the incident.
