Hotels, restaurants in Jorhat directed to conduct monthly drinking water quality tests

JORHAT, Oct 22: The Jorhat District Commissioner has directed all hotels, restaurants, guest houses, homestays, and similar establishments in the district to get their drinking water tested regularly to ensure safety and quality.

According to the order, all such establishments providing drinking water to guests or the public must conduct water quality tests from the District Level Laboratory (DLL) or the Sub-Division Level Laboratory at Titabor under the Public Health Engineering Department (PHED), or from any PHED-authorised or recognised laboratory.

The tests must be carried out every month, and the reports are to be submitted to the Additional District Commissioner (Health), Jorhat, by the seventh day of each month.

The testing shall include essential physical, chemical, and microbiological parameters as prescribed by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) for drinking water.

The PHED, Jorhat, has been instructed to facilitate timely testing services and maintain a centralised record of all reports.

The order warned that non-compliance would attract action under the provisions of the Public Health Act, the Food Safety and Standards Act, and other applicable laws.

It stated that the directive aims to safeguard public health and ensure access to safe and potable drinking water for all consumers in Jorhat district.
