DIPHU, May 1: The All Karbi Anglong Building and Others Construction Workers Union (AKAB&OCWU) and Karbi Anglong Motor Transport Workers and Drivers Union (KAMTW&DU) on Wednesday celebrated the International Workers’ Day or May Day at the building of the Diphu Municipal Board in Diphu market.
Building construction workers, daily wagers, drivers and handymen came together to celebrate the day. As part of the celebrations, the flags of AKAB&OCWU and KAMTW&DU were hoisted by the presidents of the organisations. Workers who had died were remembered by lighting candles.
Participating in the celebration, Member of Autonomous Council (MAC), Krishna Bhattarai said the International Workers’ Day is celebrated across the globe. It is an international event to recognise the contribution of workers and the working class to society.
Building construction workers and other labourers came together to celebrate the day to defend their rights and privileges. The rights of labourers (workers) cannot be taken away by someone, Bhattarai said.
Bhattarai expressed hope that the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) authority would see to the welfare of workers engaged in various unskilled activities.
President of AKAB&OCWU, Dilip Killing, president of KAMTW&DU, Abdul Noor and others were present on the occasion.

Indian Patriotic Federation Socialist, Alok Sangha and Samajwadi Janswaraj Party (SJP) observed the ‘International Workers’ Day’ on Wednesday in Dhai Ali Tin Ali in Sivasagar.
The event was inaugurated by journalist Syed Mustakur Rahman by lighting of a ceremonial lamp.
Smriti Tarpan was performed by reporter Irshad Ahmed. Addressing the gathering as chief guests, distinguished journalist Bhoirab Munda spoke on the history of the long and heroic struggle for justice of the working class a people. Pranjal Rajguru, chief convenor of SJP spoke on the objectives of the day.
Sadou Asom Nirman Shramik Santha in association with AITUC observed the day in CPI office at Station Chariali on Wednedsay. A procession of the workers was taken out in the morning. The meeting, presided over by Reba Konwar was addressed by CPI state secretary Kanak Gogoi and CPI veteran Dharma Baruah, who severely criticised the government’s anti-worker policies over the years. Madan Barua, secretary of the Nirman Shramik Santha spoke on the objectives.

The Margherita branch of Assam Chah Mazdoor Sangha (ACMS) held a programme on the occasion of ‘International Workers’ Day’ at the Ledo Tea Estate playground here on Wednesday.
The programme began with the hoisting of the union’s flag by Gautam Dhanowar, president of the Assam Chah Mazdoor Sangha Margherita branch, hoisting of May Day flag by all office bearers of ACMS, smriti tarpan by Ramkali Durga, advisor and Hemanti Mura, vice president of ACMS.
This was followed by felicitation of the chief guest and inauguration of the cultural programme and sports events.
Jugal Parashar manager of the Ledo Tea Estate, Gautam Dhanowar president of Assam Chah Mazdoor Sangha Margherita branch, president, general secretaries of all 38 tea estates, which fall under ACMS Margherita branch and more than 10,000 workers from different tea gardents were present at the International Worker’s Day celebration.
Hari Nanda Gorh, secretary of the Assam Chah Mazdoor Sangha (ACMS), Margherita branch said, “We have been celebrating the International Worker’s Day or May Day at different tea estates with great enthusiasm. We always highlight about tea garden worker’s rights during the occasion.”
“This year at an executive meeting we decided that the best performing tea estates will be awarded for their all round development. This year the Ledo Tea Estate has bagged the first prize, Pengree Tea Estate won the second prize and the Brahmajan Tea Estate won the third prize,” Gorh said.
Meanwhile the District Legal Service Authority of Tinsukia also was present on the occasion.

On the occasion of International Workers’ Day on Wednesday several organisations of employees and workers of banks, insurance, civic body, construction workers, Anganwadi centres, BSNL, medical company representatives etc. took out a procession from the CITU office in Jorhat across the town.
Holding flags, banners and placards the members of various trade unions, shouted slogans for protection of their rights and against ‘anti-labour policies’ of the BJP-led government, rising unemployment and steep hike in prices of essential commodities.
Later, an open meeting near the CITU office was held which was addressed by Promode Mahanta, a bank employees’ body and also a union leader. He, while stating about the significance of the day, flayed the ‘anti- worker and anti-farmer policies’ of the government.
He urged the workers of various fields to unitedly raise their voices against the government policies and fight for their legitimate rights. Jamini Borboruah, another union leader, in his address, expressed concern about sharp increase in prices of medicines in recent times.
Chiranjit Chaliha, Robin Dutta and Dibyendu Das of CITU were among the leaders who attended the meeting.
