JAGIROAD, June 18: A public meeting was held at Jagiroad College on Wednesday to mark the conferment of Autonomous Status on the institution by the University Grants Commission (UGC).
The programme was jointly organised by the college’s Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), the Students’ Union, and the Alumni Association.
Attending the event, local MLA and cabinet minister Pijush Hazarika congratulated principal Dr Bhaben Chandra Neog and the college staff on the achievement.
Describing Jagiroad College as one of the finest institutions in Assam, Hazarika praised its scenic campus, well-maintained infrastructure, and consistent academic performance.
He added that the new status, equivalent to “Deemed to be a University,” was well-deserved and assured continued support for the college’s development.
Tiwa Autonomous Council Chief Executive Member (CEM) Jiban Chandra Konwar also extended his congratulations to the college leadership and staff.
Principal Dr Bhaben Chandra Neog outlined his long-term vision to upgrade the institution into a full-fledged university within the next decade.
He shared a ten-year roadmap aimed at achieving this goal and thanked the college community for their collective efforts in securing the Autonomous Status, following the A+ Grade received in the third cycle of NAAC assessment in 2023.
The meeting was chaired by Governing Body Chairman Dr Puniram Patar, who credited the college’s recent achievements to the proactive leadership of the principal and the dedicated support of teaching and non-teaching staff.
He expressed appreciation to all stakeholders involved in the college’s progress.
The event was attended by members of the college’s founding families, representatives from Morigaon District Sahitya Sabha, Jagiroad Shatodol Sahitya Sabha, Jagiroad Lekhika Samaroh Samity, various NGOs, alumni, students, faculty, and members of the public.
The Alumni Association felicitated Principal Dr Neog with a letter of appreciation and traditional Assamese items including a Japi, Seleng, Gamusa, and Sorai, recognising his leadership.
The programme began with a rendition of the college song by alumni members.
Morigaon Deputy Commissioner Hriday Kumar Das also addressed the gathering.
The meeting’s objectives were outlined by General Secretary Nayanmoni Baruah, and the vote of thanks was offered by Alumni Association President Prabir Bhowmik.
The event concluded with the singing of the Asom Sangeet.
