GUWAHATI, Nov 6: The escape of a prisoner from Haflong Sub-Jail has triggered swift administrative action, with Jailor Kalyan Kumar and a warder suspended pending a full inquiry. The move follows the daring escape of Betsing Zidung, also known as Khurang Dimasa, a former Dimasa National Liberation Tigers (DNLT) cadre, from the facility around noon on November 5.
Authorities said the suspension came after preliminary findings suggested possible negligence in maintaining jail surveillance and supervision. The district administration ordered an immediate probe, while police teams continue to hunt for the fugitive who has remained untraceable for over 24 hours.
In a major development, Home Secretary Diganta Bora and DIG (Prisons) Gautam Bora reached Haflong on Thursday to personally oversee the investigation. Their visit underscores the seriousness of the incident, which has sparked concern over the management of sensitive inmates at the sub-jail.
The incident has drawn attention as two high-profile undertrials — Amritprabha Mahanta and Shekhar Jyoti Goswami, both accused in the Zubeen Garg murder case are currently lodged in the same jail. Authorities have since stepped up security measures, assuring that efforts are underway to trace the escaped prisoner and review all internal safety protocols.
