JMB to increase property tax

JORHAT, May 10:
The Jorhat Municipal Board (JMB) has decided to increase property taxes on commercial and residential holdings under the JMB areas by 15 percent and eight percent respectively with effect from April 1, 2023.

A notification issued by the municipal board, on Tuesday, stated that as per the resolution adopted at the general body meeting held on May 6, 2023, the property tax of holdings within JMB areas spread over 19 wards have been proposed to enhance with new rates (15 & 8 percent for commercial & residential holdings respectively) from April 1, 2023.

The new rates will be valid till March 31, 2028, the notification stated.

It may be mentioned here that the new rates are a climbdown from the earlier rates proposed by the JMB earlier this year. In March, there were wide-spread protests by citizens with meetings held in different localities and demonstrations staged at the JMB office building premises after the municipal body proposed a steep hike in property taxes from April this year.
