JORHAT, Nov 3: The Jorhat district administration has prohibited the transportation of live pigs, pig products and pork meat into and within the district with immediate effect in view of the large-scale spread of African Swine Fever (ASF).
Jorhat District Commissioner Jay Shivani, in her capacity as District Magistrate, issued the order on Monday stating that information was received from the District A H & Veterinary Officer, Jorhat regarding a surge in African Swine Fever cases in pigs in Bamunpukhuri, Upper Deuri, Baghmora, Morongial, Chenijan and Moutgaon areas of Jorhat district. Laboratory tests had confirmed the presence of the disease, prompting the administration to take preventive measures to stop further spread.

Considering the urgency, the DC, exercising powers under Section 163 of BNSS 2023, promulgated prohibitory orders banning the transportation of live pigs, pig products and pork meat into and within the district, selling of live pigs, pork and pork products and pig slaughter or any buying or selling of pigs within the district.
The order further stated that any pig deaths in the district must be immediately reported to the Veterinary Department for collection of samples and confirmatory diagnosis. District authorities also emphasised that pig breeders and product handlers must maintain strict biosecurity measures to prevent the disease from spreading to new areas. Transportation of pig feed would require prior permission from the Veterinary Department.
The prohibitory order comes into immediate effect and any violation will be punishable under Section 233 of BNSS.
