JORHAT, Dec 16: The District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Jorhat, launched a week-long awareness campaign on the prohibition and prevention of child marriage on Monday, focusing on 26 Government High and Higher Secondary Schools in the district.
DLSA Secretary-cum-Judicial Officer, Devojyoti Bhuyan, informed that workshops on leadership, public speaking, and advocacy training would be conducted to empower girls and make them ambassadors for change.
The awareness programs were held at five schools, including Kakojan Girls’ High School and Teok Girls’ Higher Secondary School. The programs were attended by nominated advocates, Para Legal Volunteers, officials from the District Child Protection Unit (DCPU), Child Marriage Prohibition Officers (CMPO), local officials, teachers, students, and school management committees.
The campaign focused on the roles of various stakeholders in preventing child marriage and child sexual abuse. Girl students who spoke on the subject were selected as ‘Ambassadors of Change,’ and they will advocate in their localities post-campaign. A district-level award ceremony will recognise the best speakers and select a ‘District Ambassador of Change.’
