Jorhat Pays Tribute To Parag Das On Death Anniversary

JORHAT, May 17: Rich tributes were paid to slain human rights activist and journalist Parag Kumar Das on his 26th death anniversary at the Asam Sahitya Sabha Bhawan here on Tuesday.

At the premises of Golaghat Municipal Board, Golaghat district a bust of Parag Kumar Das was unveiled by deputy commissioner MN Baruah.

The deputy commissioner said that the bust was installed by Golaghat Media Forum with aid from State Finance minister and Golaghat MLA Ajanta Neog.

The DC said that Neog was supposed to unveil the bust but due to unavoidable circumstances could not come and so he had unveiled the bust on her behalf.

He further said that Das had started the human rights movement and shown the oath to other journalists to follow.

One of the founders of Manab Adhikar Sangram Samiti and former editor of Asomiya Pratidin Parag Kumar Das was killed in broad daylight allegedly by a group of surrendered ULFA in Guwahati on May 17, 1996 at the age of 35.

In Jorhat, floral tributes were offered at the portrait by a group of people including Niranjan Mahanta, former president, MASS, Mallika Rahman founder of Sarothi old age home, Mridul Bora, president of Ghoty, the organisation which had organised the event, among others.
