JORHAT, March 20: The District Election Officer and District Commissioner of Jorhat, Jay Shivani, unveiled the official mascot ‘Jolou’ ahead of the upcoming 2026 Assembly elections. The mascot has been introduced as a symbol of awareness and motivation, aimed at encouraging voters—particularly first-time voters, to exercise their franchise responsibly and actively participate in the democratic process.

The mascot was created by a student who had secured first place in a district-level mascot competition held during the district celebrations in 2025. Its unveiling is part of efforts to enhance voter awareness and promote greater participation in elections.

A special programme was also organised under the SVEEP (Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation) initiative of the Election Commission of India. The programme aims to educate citizens about the importance of voting, electoral procedures and their role in strengthening democracy.

As part of the event, a voter pledge ceremony was conducted by officials associated with the SVEEP cell. Several senior administrative officials, election authorities and students from various colleges attended the programme.

In another initiative, the district administration has announced a Voter Awareness Competition under the SVEEP programme ahead of the elections. The competition aims to promote awareness through creativity, with categories such as digital poster making, drawing and slogan writing. Participants can submit entries online with the deadline set for March 23, 2026. Citizens and students have been encouraged to actively take part and contribute to strengthening democratic engagement.
