JORHAT, Nov 25:Â Vegetable and fish vendors who carry out their business by the side of JB Road on Friday staged a massive protest at Unnayan Bhawan premises housing the Jorhat Municipal Board office, against eviction carried out by the authorities on Thursday.
Shouting slogans against the civic body, the protestors sought a permanent place to be allotted to them if JMB prevented them from squatting at JB Road.
The protestors said that the alternate venue (old public bus stand) proposed by JMB was not acceptable as it was a temporary arrangement.
They said that they would again be shifted once the multi car parking complex got completed at the alternate venue which had been offered to them by the civic authorities.
They further said that the surroundings of the venue were not suitable as there were several illegal liquor shops.
The municipal authority, meanwhile, has agreed to discuss the matter with representatives of the vendors on Monday next to resolve the matter.
It may be mentioned here that on October 19, a JMB team led by its chairperson Lakhimi Khargharia accompanied by policemen had inspected the JB Road and asked the vendors to vacate the area as it fell in a no vending zone, due to which severe traffic congestion was taking place.
The chairperson said that the JMB had received many complaints from the local people regarding the congestion and the place becoming dirty.
