SIVASAGAR, May 10: Joutha Xangrami Mancha demands action against encroachers on Jamuna and Moridikhow, the natural reservoirs in Sivasagar town.
In a memorandum to the chief minister and the Revenue minister of the state, which was submitted to the deputy commissioner of Sivasagar on Wednesday, the Mancha pointed out that the Jamuna canal is part of the historic Siva-doul and Sivasagar Borpukhuri complex excavated during the Ahom Queen Draupadi alias Ambika. The Jamun canal, surrounding the historic tank, plays an important role in sustaining the balance of the ecosystem. The illegal encroachment has shocked the once vibrant water body by dumping all kinds of garbage. Similarly, the memorandum also said that Moridikhow also had played its role as a natural waterbody, relieving the Sivasagar people from the menace of flash floods. Hence, a concrete masterplan is needed to restore the health of the water bodies by evicting all encroachments, the memorandum said. It was signed, on behalf of the Mancha, by Debajit Dutta, Pankaj Mout, Waliful Rahman, Ranjal Bordoloi, and Utpal Burahohain.
