TEZPUR, Dec 12: The sixth death anniversary of former MLA and social activist Rajen Borthakur was observed on Wednesday at Nij-Haleswar with tributes, cultural programmes and community participation. The event, organised by local residents and the Rajen Borthakur Memorial Committee, highlighted Borthakur’s contributions to the socio-cultural and sports life of Tezpur and Rangapara.
The Rajen Borthakur Memorial Award 2025 was conferred on vocalist, music director, actor and former student leader Kamal Rashid Ahmed for his contributions to culture. Ahmed was felicitated with traditional honours, including a phulam gamocha, cheleng chador, citation, memento and cash prize, by Borthakur’s spouse Monisha and elder brother Jiten Borthakur.
The programme included a minute of silence for departed music icons Zubeen Garg, Deepak Sarma and Syed Sadulla; reminiscences by former AASU leader Dilip Bora and student leader Santanu Mahanta and reflections on Borthakur’s legacy by his brother Jiten Borthakur and social worker Pramod Nath. Activities included garlanding Borthakur’s statue, Swahid Tarpan, a children’s drawing competition, Naam-Prasanga and evening lamp-lighting.
Sibasagar Barhoi was also felicitated for maintaining Borthakur’s memorial statue. The event was anchored by Pramod Nath.
