DIPHU, Feb 26: With the 2026 Assam Legislative Assembly elections drawing near, the Karbi Anglong district administration has issued a comprehensive prohibitory order to maintain law and order across the hill district.
The directive was issued by District Magistrate and District Election Officer Aranyak Saikia, IAS, covering the three Assembly constituencies in the district — 108-Bokajan (ST), 109-Howraghat (ST), and 110-Diphu (ST).
Invoking powers under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, the administration has imposed an immediate ban on the carrying of firearms, sharp weapons including spears and maces, and other traditional combat tools.
The transportation of explosives and highly inflammable substances has also been strictly prohibited for the entire election period.
The measures are aimed at preventing intimidation, curbing potential violence, and ensuring a peaceful and fair electoral process.
In a major security-related decision, the District Magistrate has directed all licensed arms holders in the district to surrender their weapons without delay.
License holders have been instructed to deposit their arms and ammunition at the nearest police station and obtain proper receipts in accordance with Rule 48 of the Arms Rules, 2016.
Banks and recognised financial institutions have been exempted from the order to ensure the security of monetary assets.
The district administration stated that the prohibitory order has come into force immediately and will remain effective until the completion of the entire election process.
Authorities have warned that strict legal action will be taken against anyone found violating the order.
With polling expected in the March–April window, the administration has emphasised its commitment to ensuring a peaceful democratic process across Karbi Anglong.
