DIPHU, Feb 8: Karbi Anglong on Sunday paid rich floral tributes to Semson Sing Ingty, regarded as the architect of modern Karbi Anglong, on his 116th birth anniversary.
Late Ingty (1910–1948), widely revered as the “Father of the Karbi People” and the “Father of Karbi Nationalism”, was a pioneering social reformer, author and leader who played a crucial role in uniting the Karbi community.

He founded the Karbi Adorbar in 1946 to press for administrative autonomy, a movement that ultimately led to the formation of the United Mikir and North Cachar Hills district.
In Diphu, the Chief Executive Member of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) Tuliram Ronghang, along with executive members, MACs and other dignitaries, offered floral tributes at the statue of late Ingty during a commemorative programme held at the Old Semson Sing Ingty Memorial Park.
Meanwhile, at Hidipi Market, a life-size statue of late Ingty was unveiled by KAAC Executive Member Surjya Rongphar, who is in charge of the Health and Family Welfare and Art and Culture departments.
The unveiling ceremony was preceded by traditional rituals performed by kurusars (Karbi traditional priests) in accordance with Karbi customary faith.
Following the unveiling, attendees and kurusars representing the five clans of the Karbi tribe offered floral tributes and lit incense to honour the revered leader.
Addressing the gathering, Rongphar said the statue was sponsored by the KAAC Art and Culture Department. Emphasising the importance of preserving Ingty’s legacy, he said statues of the leader should be installed in rural and remote villages so that future generations are made aware of his life, vision and contributions.
He added that the Art and Culture Department is planning to install statues of late Ingty at three more locations in Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong in the coming years.
Highlighting Ingty’s contributions, the executive member said it was through his visionary leadership that the Karbi people were united and empowered.
The commemorative programme was attended by Karbi Lammet Amei general secretary On Teron, VDC chairman Sonaram Singnar, Board chairman Philip Teron, principal of the Karbi Traditional Music and Culture Research Institute Bonsam Kathar, along with several other dignitaries and members of the public.
