NAGAON, July 24: A large number of women from across Karbi Anglong district gathered in Nagaon on Thursday to protest the murder of Nomrata Ingtipi, demanding justice and strong action against the accused.
The protest was led by the United Forum of Women of Karbi Anglong and saw participants marching silently from the Clock Tower to the office of the District Commissioner.
According to information received from the organisers, the protestors carried placards bearing messages such as “Justice for Nomrata’s murder,” “We want justice,” “Hang the killer,” and “Judicial inquiry into Nomrata’s murder.”
They demanded that the accused, Saddam Hussain, be awarded the death penalty and that a judicial inquiry be initiated into the circumstances of the case.
The protestors expressed serious concerns regarding the initial handling of the case by the Nagaon police.
They alleged that there were lapses in the identification of the victim’s body and criticised the police for allowing the Raha family to cremate a body that allegedly did not belong to their kin.
The demonstrators also accused both the government and law enforcement agencies of failing to ensure the safety and security of women and girls.
A memorandum was submitted to the Nagaon District Commissioner calling for justice for Nomrata Ingtipi and seeking the maximum punishment for the accused.
It may be noted that the Nagaon Karbi Students’ Union had also organised a protest in Nagaon on Tuesday raising similar demands.
