GUWAHATI, July 20: The 11th Krishna Kanta Handiqui Memorial Lecture was organised on Sunday at the City Campus of Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University (KKHSOU), Khanapara, to commemorate the birth anniversary of the renowned scholar, linguist and Indologist, Prof Krishna Kanta Handiqui.
The event began with a floral tribute to Prof. Handiqui’s statue within the university premises.
This was followed by the University Anthem and the ceremonial lighting of the lamp, marking the formal commencement of the programme.
Prof Prasenjit Das, director of the Padmanath Gohainbaruah School of Humanities and chairperson of the organising committee, delivered the welcome address.
In his remarks, Prof Das underscored the enduring relevance of Prof Handiqui’s intellectual legacy and its influence on contemporary higher education.
The memorial lecture was delivered by Prof Pradip Jyoti Mahanta, a noted academician and scholar, on the theme “Krishna Kanta Handiqui, Cultural History and Heritage: A Few Perspectives.”
Prof Mahanta, in his address, spoke on Prof Handiqui’s engagement with classical traditions, his contributions to comparative literature and cultural historiography, and the importance of preserving indigenous intellectual heritage in present-day discourse.
Prof Rajendra Prasad Das, vice-chancellor of KKHSOU, delivered the presidential address, paying tribute to Prof Handiqui’s scholarly achievements and commitment to knowledge.
He reaffirmed the university’s resolve to carry forward his legacy by promoting academic excellence, cultural rootedness and meaningful public engagement.
Dharmeswar Konwar, MLA of Sonari and a member of the board of management of KKHSOU, was also present on the occasion.
His attendance added to the importance of the event and signified the shared commitment of the academic and public spheres to cultural and educational advancement.
Prof Pranjit Bora, registrar (i/c), KKHSOU, delivered the vote of thanks and expressed gratitude to the invited speaker, dignitaries, faculty members, students and staff for their active participation and support in making the event a success.
The programme was conducted by Dr Trisha Dowerah Baruah, assistant professor in the Discipline of Mass Communication, who anchored the event.
The memorial lecture reaffirmed KKHSOU’s ongoing commitment to honouring the intellectual legacy of Prof Krishna Kanta Handiqui and upholding the values of academic inquiry, cultural awareness and the pursuit of knowledge.
