GUWAHATI, July 16: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday conducted a detailed review of facilities and services at the Kokrajhar Medical College and Hospital (KMCH), underscoring the government’s commitment to transforming the institution into a premier healthcare and teaching facility in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR).
According to an official statement, Sarma inspected several key departments including the Out Patient Department (OPD), Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Blood Bank, Orthopaedic OPD, Central Clinical Laboratory, CT Scan Unit, Medical Records Department (MRD), and the Paying Cabins.
He reviewed the functioning of each unit and took note of the patient load—both indoor and outdoor—and the hospital’s capacity to deliver timely and advanced healthcare services to the people of Kokrajhar and neighbouring districts.
Later, the chief minister chaired a high-level meeting with officials, faculty, and healthcare administrators to identify and address critical gaps in infrastructure, staffing, and service delivery.
During the meeting, Sarma assessed the availability of medical, paramedical, and support staff, and reviewed infrastructure provisions such as hostel facilities for students and residential quarters for faculty and healthcare workers.
Highlighting the strategic importance of the college as the only government-run medical institution in the BTR, the chief minister reiterated that the State government is taking focused steps to develop KMCH into a centre of excellence.
Sarma also interacted with doctors, nurses, and students to understand the specific challenges they face on the ground.
He assured that appropriate measures would be taken to address infrastructural and operational concerns and emphasised the government’s broader resolve to strengthen healthcare delivery and medical education in the region.
The chief minister was accompanied by minister for handloom and textile, UG Brahma, Rajya Sabha MP Rwngwra Narzary, Kokrajhar East MLA Lawrence Islary, BTC executive members Arup Kumar Dey and Sajal Singh, deputy commissioner Masanda M Pertin, and Principal of KMCH Atul Boro, among others.
The visit reflects the Assam government’s continued emphasis on equitable and accessible public healthcare in remote and underserved areas of the state.
