The celebration, held at the Conference Hall of the Office of the District Commissioner, brought together senior officials, educators, social leaders, and citizens to honour the district’s enduring legacy.

In her address, district commissioner Masanda M Pertin, IAS, highlighted the district’s unique historical and cultural trajectory. “Kokrajhar stands as a testament to resilience.

Despite numerous administrative, political, and demographic changes, our district has held firm to its distinct character and spirit,” she said.

The Commissioner also encouraged citizens to mark the day by lighting lamps outside their homes and illuminating government buildings, symbolising unity and pride in Kokrajhar’s journey.

Dr Banabina Brahma, associate professor at Kokrajhar Government College, offered a historical perspective on the formation of the district.

She recalled that Kokrajhar was officially declared a district on July 1, 1983, under the leadership of then chief minister Hiteswar Saikia.

Prior to that, it functioned as a sub-division under Goalpara district during the tenure of chief minister Bimala Prasad Chaliha.

“This day marks not just an administrative milestone, but a historic assertion of our distinct cultural and political identity,” she noted.

As part of the observance, residents were encouraged to light traditional lamps in their homes, turning the district into a symbolic beacon of heritage and hope.

The programme concluded with a collective reaffirmation of Kokrajhar’s commitment to inclusive development, cultural pride, and community-driven progress.

The event served as a reminder of Kokrajhar’s remarkable journey and its role as a cornerstone of cultural unity and administrative evolution in Assam.
